A letter from Sheila Ellis (Mums Cousin in America)

1960 - 2016

It began with a letter, traveling across the Atlantic, from a cousin whom I'd never met. It was the late 60s, and we had lots to share - our favorite pop groups and songs and what was happening in school. How exciting! Next followed a wedding photo of a beautiful bride (and who is that skinny fellow?), and then lovely baby photos and postcards from faraway places. Someday, when I am able, I said, I want so much to meet this family of my mother's and, in the 90s, my dream came true. It was an emotional time, and I was crying before I even got there! However, it is one thing to exchange letters and photos, quite another to meet face-to-face. Will they like me? Will we get along?

After being greeted so warmly and affectionately, it didn't take me long to come to admire Rosemary's strength and uncanny wisdom, her ability to hold things together - this matriarch who cared unselfishly for her family (including Uncle Bill, who relied on her care and presence throughout his years of poor health). Rosemary and Alan were the solid support for him, and for their parents too, making many sacrifices for them and their family so that they may have a better life. It was all very apparent to me, and she graciously extended her care and hospitality to me on my visits. We could share our thoughts and secrets (yes, there were some) so easily (like sisters would), and she could tell me the truth when I needed to hear it. It was so nice to have another "sister" to share with.

I am missing my friend, my confidante, my family. I will hold her memory close to my heart, and I pray to see her again, when we can catch up with where we left off - - -

I extend my most sincere love and condolences to her much-loved family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers,

With love and appreciation,
Sheila (from America)
